UPDATE: Investigations into the death of Mozambican man crushed by train underway

DOORNFONTEIN – The incident involving a Mozambican man who was crushed to death by a commuter train at the Doornfontein Station on 4 April is being treated as an accident.

Investigations into the death of a Mozambican man who was crushed by a commuter train at the Doornfontein Station in what is believed to be a horror accident on 4 April are underway.

“An investigation is underway to establish the facts, however, the incident is being treated as an accident,” Prasa (Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa) spokesperson, Lilian Mofokeng told City Buzz.

“Incidents like this happen in different areas, not necessarily at Doornfontein Station [only]. I don’t have statistics, however, I can confirm that it’s once in a while at the station in question.”

City Buzz reported previously that when detectives on the scene cordoned off the area around the body – resulting in railway gridlock – hundreds of stranded commuters could be seen scurrying along the railway tracks on foot. When asked what security measures were in place to ensure the safety of train commuters, particularly those who daringly walk across the railway tracks, Mofokeng said, ” No commuters are allowed to travel next to the railway line. As and when they are found, they are subjected to being redirected to use the correct entrances. It is illegal.”

When asked what the chances of surviving being hit by a train, she said, “Chances are slim, however, it all depends on the nature of the injuries.” She added that if people survive, some lose their legs or arms.
