Is everyone participating in #AntiZumaMarches ?

JOBURG - As #AntiZumaMarches gain momentum, some Joburg residents have chosen, instead, not to participate.

As the whirlwind of planned protests around #AntiZumaMarches gained momentum in communities around Joburg, throngs were expected to don their black attire in a stark display of solidarity.

During this landmark occasion, City Buzz caught up with a number of Joburg residents who will not be participating in any march.

Chifiwe Makhode told City Buzz that he could not participate actively because of work-related commitments. “I would be participating but, unfortunately, I have a court case that I have to attend,” he said.

“If I wasn’t going to work, I would be [showing] my support because I’m not happy at all with that is happening in our government.”

Alex Mandizvhidza, a hawker in the vicinity of the Central Methodist Mission said, “People are not sure exactly what will happen.” He added that many marches result in looting and violence. “And so most shops are not going to open because of that,” he said.

Elroy Major, a taxi rank manager in Pritchard Street, defiantly rubbished the notion of protest action. “I don’t believe in those things [marches],” he said.

“I don’t even care about this Zuma or what. Zuma [doesn’t] do anything for me.”

Also not participating in any planned march, Rani Moodley said, “I believe the majority rules and so the majority will manage to get Zuma to step down.

“Unfortunately, I don’t believe too much in politics, hence I do not want to participate.”
