DA takes victory for Ward 73

JOHANNESBURG – DA retains the ward after two of their previous councillors resigned.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ward 73 has come out victorious following their by-elections which were held on 4 and 5 April.

DA retained the ward with Eleanor Huggett as the new councillor for the ward after two of the party’s previous councillors resigned.

Huggett beat African National Congress’ (ANC) Stanley Letsoalo and Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF) Shaun Gavaza-Nwaiwu in the elections.

According to the results, DA attained 84.39 per cent with 3 644 votes, ANC 11.05 per cent with 477 votes and EFF 4.52 per cent with 197 votes.

The two previous councillors resigned last year just a few months apart following the Local Government Elections on 3 August.

The by-elections were facilitated by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

According to Huggett, much still needs to be done to improve service delivery in the area which comprises parts of Killarney, Norwood, Houghton and Orange Grove.

She promised to work hand-in-hand with all the residents, despite their political affiliations.

An excited Huggett said she was looking forward to meeting all civic, non-governmental organisations, political and religious organisations and resident associations in the ward to map out a way forward.

She said that this would be her first duty to ensure that they all work together for the benefit of the community at large. “I want to make sure that service providing is efficient and I promise to work with all of them as a team. I want to have full participation from all the associations in the ward because there is so much that still needs fixing,” she said.

Huggett thanked the voters for ‘making the right choice’ adding that they have always been supportive.

When contacted, Letsoalo could not be reached for comment as he was considered the strongest contender ahead of the elections.
