UPDATE: ‘Dagga Gang’ court case postponed again

JEPPE – A gang which allegedly terrorises the community using pangas and dangerous objects appear in court for the third time.

A case involving members of the notorious ‘Dagga Gang’ was postponed by the Jeppe Magistrates’ Court on 24 March for further investigation.

Five members of the gang appeared briefly in court for the third time, and they are expected to appear in court again on 18 May.

The gang allegedly terrorised and assaulted residents of Yeoville, Bez Valley and Bertrams using pangas and other dangerous objects.

Earlier, the five accused appeared before Magistrate Mahomed Jaybhay in Court 1 before it was transferred to Court 2.

In Court 2, magistrate Willem Britz postponed the matter to the set date for plea and trial.

This was after the prosecutor, Mxolisi Nkomo indicated that the photos of one of the victims or complainants that were supposed to be submitted as part of the evidence, were not yet available. “I also think the matter is not yet ready for trial since we have no photos and I’m not sure of the reasons they referred the matter to us. The case is still premature,” said Nkomo.

Britz postponed the matter and remanded all the accused in custody until 18 May.

A complainant, whose name has been withheld because he fears for his life, was also informed that he needs to be available on the date of the trial and that he needs to submit photos as well.

Meanwhile, the victim has asked other victims who have fallen prey to vicious attacks by the gang to come forward and make sure that the suspects face the full might of the law.
