Ward 73 by-election coming up for Houghton, Norwood, Orange Grove and surrounds

HOUGHTON – See which position became vacant after councillor Mia Snyman resigned and what political parties are doing ahead of the by-elections.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ward 73 wants to retain its seat as the party prepares to contest the upcoming by-elections set for 5 April in the northern suburbs.

The position became vacant after DA councillor Mia Snyman resigned on 1 December last year, citing abuse as the main reason for her resignation.

Chloe Haggard, DA constituency officer in the ward, said the City of Joburg and City of Tshwane mayors, Herman Mashaba and Solly Msimanga, will also attend.

Haggard said they would introduce their new council candidate, Eleanor Huggett, as a contender for the by-elections and would also discuss other issues of the ward which comprises Norwood, Orange Groove, Houghton and other surrounding areas.

“We want to introduce our candidate to the public to provide them with an opportunity to know her, but we will also have discussions on other issues that affect them in the ward.

“Among them is the issue of moving Pikitup to Ward 74 and various other planned developments within Ward 73,” Haggard said.

There will also be time for questions and answers with the candidate and mayors.

Haggard concluded and said, “Everyone is welcome.”

Meanwhile, the African National Congress (ANC) is also pulling out all the stops to win the ward and have also revealed their candidate, Stanley Letsoalo.

Sol Cowan, a former ANC councillor said, “We are organising a debate among all candidates who are contesting the by-elections.”
