LISTEN: The Congress of South African Students (Cosas) scheduled protest is illegal

BRAAMFONTEIN – Motorists to avoid the Metro centre, specifically De Korte Street, Rissik Street and Joubert Street as well as Kloof Street on 17 March.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar has confirmed that no protest will be taking place in Braamfontein today.

This follows reports of a planned march by an organisation called the Joburg Social Movement.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said, “The protest was not legal and so the route, time and meeting points were not specific.”

He added that there was still a high number of Metro police in the area.

Minnaaar explained that while the protest scheduled for today did not take place, The Congress of South African Students (Cosas) had indicated their plans of a protest on 17 March, “Cosas have indicated that they will be protesting at Metro Centre tomorrow… We are expecting a violent protest,” he said.

He urged motorists to avoid the Metro centre, specifically De Korte Street, Rissik Street and Joubert Street as well as Kloof Street.

Minnaar added that the Cosas protest was illegal and so the route, time or meeting point of the protest was unknown. He stated that there would be a high number of metro police presence in the area.

Earlier reports also indicated that a protest took place on 15 March also headed by Cosas. “Where there was serious crime those will be investigated by the police,” he concluded.
