Parktown North Residents Association warns of potential sinkhole

PARKTOWN NORTH: A small pothole may pose a potential risk to drivers in Parktown North

There are concerns that small pothole situated on the corner of Chester Road and 3rd Avenue could develop into a sinkhole as it runs underneath the surface of the road.

Lee Young, the administrator for the Parktown North Residents Association (PNRA) said, “It doesn’t look very big from the side of the road… but you can actually go and put an entire broom into… [it] along the length of the road.”

The hole was noticed by a member of the Community in Action (CIA) squad, which is an initiative set up by the PNRA. Members of the CIA perform routine checks around the suburb.

The matter has been reported to the Johannesburg Roads Agency and an inspector went to take photographs and inspect the area but there has been no feedback on the matter. “We’ve been trying to get them to send out a team to investigate it but they have a backlog of stuff to do,” said Young.

Bertha Peter-Scheepers, the spokesperson for the Johannesburg Roads Agency said, “If it is a sinkhole it will be evaluated to see if it is a risk to drivers or pedestrians and if there is any risk it will be evaluated if the road needs to be closed or not.”

If it is determined to be a sinkhole then the JRA will take immediate action to repair the sinkhole. The inspector will determine whether or not the hole requires immediate attention or not.
