WATCH: Taxis cause havoc on the corner of Argyle and Jan Smuts avenues in Craighall Park

CRAIGHALL PARK – It is reported that roads such as Westminster Road and Lancaster Avenue are under traffic pressure due to taxis during peak hours.

Those who drive regularly on Jan Smuts Avenue in Craighall Park will be all too familiar with the chaos that often ensues during peak hour traffic due to taxi drivers ignoring the rules of the road.

The corner of Argyle and Jan Smuts avenues is rapidly becoming an issue as taxis push their way into oncoming traffic, turning a two-way road into a messy one-way traffic jam.

“I have brought this issue to the [Metro police] before and I haven’t received any feedback yet,” said Ward 90 councillor Martin Williams.

“Just this week I received calls about this particular road. This happens at many intersections in our ward and I am going to bring it up with the [Metro police] again.”

Argyle Avenue is not the only road that is affected by this problem. It is reported that roads such as Westminster Road and Lancaster Avenue are under traffic pressure due to taxis during peak hours. “Just the other day, I was attempting to cross from Lancaster Avenue over to Jan Smuts and I saw four taxis driving on the opposite side of the road against oncoming traffic,” said Williams.

“This issue is shocking.”

Edna Mamonyane of the Metro police has been notified of this issue and confirmed that they would be monitoring the situation. “We will be sending vehicles out to the location in Craighall Park during the morning or afternoon when traffic is most heavy so that we can investigate further,” Mamonyane said.
