Man accused of the murder of 3 women and 2 minors in Hillbrow appears in the Johannesburg Regional Court

JOBURG - Man accused of murdering 5 people will reappear in court on 17 March.

A man appeared in the Johannesburg Regional Court today in connection with the murder of five people – three women and two minors – at Madison Square in Hillbrow on 20 February.

Sabelo Ngubane was arrested by the Gauteng police on 8 March, after the police received a number of tip-offs from community members in the suburb.

He faces charges relating to five counts of murder and two additional charges related to possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
The bodies of the women and children were found in an apartment on the ninth floor of the apartment building.
Magistrate Simon Radasi began the court proceeding by explaining to the accused that he faces ‘very serious’ charges that carry minimum sentences of life imprisonment.

Radasi asked Ngubane if he wants the court to appoint a legal representative for him. Ngubane informed the court that he will be appointing his own lawyer.

Radasi adjourned the court until 17 March when Ngubane will appear again. State prosecutor Talita Louw opposed bail as Ngubane faces schedule 6 offences under the Criminal Procedures Act.
