Suspect nabbed for copper theft in downtown Joburg

NEWTOWN – One suspect arrested in connection with copper cable theft in Newtown.

A resident who lives in Newtown Junction blew the whistle on crime after alerting Joburg Central Police to alleged cable thieves in the area.

While conducting routine crime prevention patrols in Newtown, police were approached by the complainant at about 9pm on 6 March.

According to Captain Xoli Mbele, spokesperson for Joburg Central Police, the man approached the police patrol vehicle and notified officers of what he had seen.

“Police were approached by a member of the public who told them that a group of males were busy stealing copper cables on the corner of Carr and Henry Nxumalo streets,” said Mbele.

“Swift response by the police led to the arrest of one of the suspects, a 33-year-old male, while his accomplices managed to get away on foot. It is estimated that the price of the recovered copper amounts to at least R12 500.”

The suspect is in police custody and will appear in Joburg Magistrates’ Court soon.
