Man abducted during hijacking found in downtown Joburg

JOBURG – Abducted man rescued by Metro police more than 24 hours later

According to Metro police spokesperson, chief superintendent Wayne Minnaar, a victim (identity undisclosed) was held hostage inside a dilapidated building in Delvers Street in downtown Joburg for 24 hours, after he was allegedly hijacked.

“The man was hijacked on Thursday afternoon as he exited the M2 Joe Slovo off-ramp. After [an undisclosed number of] suspects moved in on him, they bound his hands and feet with wire and gagged his mouth using rags,” Minnaar said.

“Metro police received a tip-off from homeless people who’d spotted the victim inside the building. Acting on the tip-off, Metro police moved in and rescued the victim late in the evening of 3 March,” he added.

Minnaar indicated that the victim’s car, an Isuzu bakkie, was recovered in the underground parking of the building. The victim is said to have been taken to a hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, the suspects are still at large while a police investigation is underway.

This is an ongoing story and more details will follow as they become available.
