Police in Gauteng would like to warn members of the public who are committing crimes by looting the shops that no acts of criminality will be tolerated.
This follows the arrest of five people at Jeppestown on 27 February on charges of public violence and business breaking.
According to Provincial police spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini, police were forced to use stun grenades and rubber bullets to disperse a group of approximately 200 who had gathered outside George Goch Hostel.
“An unlawful gathering of the residents of George Goch Hostel who were proceeding to M1 highway and throwing stones were stopped by the police and forced to go back to the hostel,” he said.
Dlamini added that whilst police were patrolling in the area, they observed a group of suspects who attempted to break into a shop at Vickers Road. Three suspects were arrested while others managed to run away. Another shop near Mai Mai hostel was broken into and looted but police responded and arrested further two suspects.
Police have increased deployments in the area to maintain law and order.
No incidents have been reported today.
