Encouraging women to (SLA)Y

JOBURG – Move over BeyHive, it's time for the SheHive to take over.

Back by popular demand, She Leads Africa’s SheHive returned to Joburg this month to inspire more local women.

She Leads Africa (SLA) is a social organisation which aims to encourage women to build their own businesses and realise their dreams, and in order to achieve this, the founders of the initiative launched SheHive in 2016.

Taking place for the second time, in 2017, SheHive could be described as an incubator or a several-day-long programme open to the powerful female public who would like to engage with like-minded women on the topic of business.

This year, the programme was held in the most fitting location in Johannesburg – Maboneng – a hub of business and arts which have come together in perfect harmony.

Explaining the mission driving the team, co-founder of the organisation, Yasmin Belo-Osagie said, “The SLA team is passionate about uplifting and advancing women and with the help of our facilitators, we hope each guest will leave with the necessary skills to help them reach their potential in their businesses and careers.”

Swaady Martin is the founder of YSWARA, a company that produces gourmet artisan African teas, and she was one of the speakers at SheHive Johannesburg, along with Tania Holt from the global consulting firm McKinsey & Co, and Sawa Nakagawa, chief executive officer of E Squared Investment.

Khetiwe Gumede, who attended the workshops in Maboneng noted that she was ‘inspired by these amazing African women’.

Not only helping the women in attendance to realise their professional potential and push them to live up to it; the boot camps, workshops and seminars that took place over the duration of the programme were also platforms to allow for networking and ultimately facilitating women-focused business ventures in South Africa.

Travelling to a number of locations this year, including Nairobi and Abuja, in addition to the two South African locations, Johannesburg and Cape Town, there’s no reason why women should not pursue their own careers this year.
