Robbery leaves innocent man dead

HILLBROW – A customer was shot and killed during a business robbery-in-progress in Hillbrow.

An unsuspecting customer, believed to be in his 30’s, sustained a fatal gunshot wound during an apparent robbery-in-progress at a street-side cafe situated on the corner of Twist and Goldreich streets in Hillbrow on 22 February.

According to ER24 spokesperson, Russel Meiring, ER24 paramedics found a contingent of local law enforcement in attendance upon arrival at the scene and were led into the cafe where they found the male lying on the floor.

“ER24 Paramedics assessed the patient and found that he had sustained a fatal gunshot wound. Unfortunately, nothing could be done for the man and he was declared dead on the scene,” said Meiring.

Sergeant Mduduzi Zondo, spokesperson for Hillbrow Police Station said that at approximately 5.50pm, a group of five armed robbers stormed into the shop and ordered customers and shop employees to lie the floor.

“During the robbery, an unsuspecting customer walked into the shop. Once he realised what was happening, he attempted to leave but was shot in the upper body and succumbed to his wounds,” he said.

According to Zondo, the suspects are still at large after taking an undisclosed amount of money and airtime. A murder and business robbery docket has been opened and a police investigation is underway.
