Ready, set, recycle!

JOHANNESBURG – The Glass Recycling Company invites you and your school to participate in the 2017 Annual Glass Recycling Schools Competition.

The Glass Recycling Company is launching this year’s Annual Glass Recycling Schools Competition, inviting children their school to participate and make a positive impact on the environment.

Parents, schoolchildrenand teachers are invited to join and reduce their carbon footprint to win great cash prizes.

According to the CEO of the Glass Recycling Company, Shabeer Jhetam, “Schools wishing to participate will need to request a glass bank for their school; this will be where the community will be able to deposit their glass bottles and jars for recycling. The presence of a glass bank encourages parents, learners, teachers and local residents to engage in responsible recycling behaviour by separating their recyclables.”

Integrating recycling habits, green behaviour and purpose will enable South Africa’s next generation to learn about the importance of recycling. According to the Glass Recycling Company, this can encourage the country’s young minds to actively engage in sustainable solutions. The company will also supply curriculum compliant material for teachers to utilise in the classroom, teaching their wards a holistic view of the glass recycling process.

“We are committed to bringing a greener, cleaner country to the next generation, and our aim is to educate and encourage young consumers to ‘recover, reuse and recycle’, as well as to emphasise how glass recycling positively impacts the environment with minimal effort,” said Jhetam.

This competition aims for schools in Gauteng, Western Cape, Durban and Pietermaritzburg to compete in collecting the most glass bottles and jars for recycling. This year, East London and Port Elizabeth have been added as regions that can participate, and Eastern Cape schools can join the recycling competition. The schools that collect the highest tonnage of glass in each region can win up to R1 500 and annual cash prizes of up to R30 000 for their schools.

Last year, 1.7 million bottles and jars were collected by contributing schools. By recycling this amount of glass, enough energy is saved to operate a computer constantly for over 12 years, and operate a TV for eight years. This year’s competition closes in October.
