At approximately 7.58pm on 22 February, a lone gunman opened fire on a group of four people walking along Plein and Banket streets in downtown Joburg, before fleeing the scene.
Three of the group suffered gunshot wounds, with the fourth, a 32-year-old unidentified man, sustaining a fatal shot. According to Joburg Central Police spokesperson, Xoli Mbele, three victims were transported to hospitals around Johannesburg for treatment.
“A male victim was declared dead at the scene, while the other three, all male, were transported to various hospitals. It is alleged that at least two of the survivors were treated and discharged, while one victim remains in hospital in a stable condition,” he said.
“The suspect is still at large and the motive for the shooting is unknown. Police recovered several spent cartridges at the scene and continue with investigations.”
