Three suspects nabbed for hijacking and robbery

JOBURG – Hijacking and robbery suspects found and arrested whilst filling up at petrol station.

Three suspects aged 25 to 27 were arrested in connection with an alleged car hijacking and robbery incident at a petrol garage at the corner of Nugget and Commissioner streets at approximately 12.30am on 21 February.

The victim is said to have been assaulted by a number of male suspects before being relieved of cash, valuables and the vehicle he was travelling in at the time.

“Suspects hijacked and robbed a 21-year-old driver of a meter taxi this morning [21 February]. It is alleged that a white Toyota Hilux taxi bumped into a white Toyota Quest, [following which] the driver of the metre taxi stopped to inspect the damage,” said the spokesperson for the Johannesburg Central Police Station, Xoli Mbele.

“The occupants of the Toyota Hilux taxi [proceeded] to assault the metre taxi driver, [in addition to which] they robbed him of an undisclosed amount of money before jumping into his car and driving off.”

Following the incident, the victim is said to have spotted a police vehicle that was on a routine crime prevention patrol and alerted them. Police found three of the suspects in the process of filling up at a petrol station in the same taxi and were arrested.

Captain Mbele added, “The victim’s vehicle was recovered at Nancefield hostel and three suspects are still at large. A police investigation is under way and suspects will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court tomorrow.”
