Weather warning for Johannesburg

JOBURG – Stay safe in rainy weather

The South African National Weather Service has warned that heavy rains will continue in Johannesburg until Wednesday with scattered showers expected throughout the weekend.

Severe weather warnings have been issued in parts of the Western Cape, Gauteng, North West and the Eastern Cape.

In Johannesburg, there is a high possibility of flash flooding, gale force winds and severe thunderstorms.

Wayne Venter, a forecaster for the South African National Weather Service, warned that while extreme weather conditions are not expected today there is an 80 per cent chance of rain tomorrow. “There will be a high chance of rain and flooding tomorrow and it is expected throughout Gauteng,” he said.

The South African Weather Service has encouraged residents to be careful as a severe weather warning may lead to disruptive and disastrous conditions.

Venter said that tomorrow, residents should stay away from low-lying bridges, rivers and roads prone to flooding and keep updated on areas to avoid. “People can follow us on Twitter at SA Weather Service for updates on the weather.”

Last week, tropical storm Dineo caused flooding in areas throughout Limpopo; however, the storm has since moved towards Botswana and is no longer the cause of thunderstorms experienced throughout South Africa.
