Suspect nabbed for attempted murder

JOHANNESBURG – A suspect is nabbed after allegedly shooting a security guard in the leg.

Johannesburg Central Police officers recently arrested a 31-year-old suspect for an attempted murder outside Diamond Towers, situated on the corner of De Villiers and Claim streets, on 18 February at 4am.

According to the spokesperson for the Johannesburg Central Police, Captain Xoli Mbele, a security guard was shot in the lower body, allegedly by a taxi driver, and taken to hospital by ambulance in a stable condition.

“The suspect [allegedly] shot a security guard once in the leg in the above-mentioned streets before fleeing the scene. The [victim] was taken to hospital by an ambulance. After [shooting the security guard], the suspect ran to a nearby building where witnesses notified the police of his whereabouts,” said Mbele.

According to Mbele, police officers moved in on the suspect and apprehended him. “They recovered the firearm [allegedly] used to commit the crime.”
The motive for the shooting has not been established as yet.

“Additional charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition were also charged against the suspect. A police investigation is said to be underway, with the suspect expected to appear in Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court soon.”
