This year’s ceremony was held at the Wanderers Golf Club. At the ceremony, Peter James Smith, the president of the Rosebank Rotary Club, presented the awards and paid tribute to those being honoured saying that in their working lives, the recipients had demonstrated that their work in communities was very much in line with the Rotary motto of service above self.

Those who received awards were Paul Bruns, founder of the Hlumelelisa Project. The project has over the years run programmes aimed at rehabilitating prisoners and parolees by equipping them with agricultural skills that help them to take care of themselves and make a positive contribution to their communities once they have been released.

Sharon Da Silva was awarded for her dedication to helping the poorest of the poor by establishing a variety of programmes supplying food, clothing, toiletries and other necessities to extremely disadvantaged communities in Gauteng.

Tyron Sharnock was honoured for the immense contribution he has made over many years by running a series of leadership programmes on a pro-bono basis for Grade 11s in Gauteng. The intervention equips scholars with the leadership skills they need in their school and adult lives.

Doudou Kanda received his award for his tireless efforts in helping refugees from African countries obtain legal residence in South Africa.
