Charitable bowls message to community

LOMBARDY EAST – More exposure needed for bowls clubs in Johannesburg.

With the alleged mismanagement of the Johannesburg Property Company and the uncertain future for bowls clubs, a few determined and passionate individuals are fighting the fight and asking the community to join the effort.

With more than 35 active clubs in Johannesburg, more exposure, encouragement of youth groups and a community effort, lawn bowls could thrive. It has brought much honour to South Africa with international achievements in both the open able-bodied arena as well as disability sport for the physically and visually impaired. South Africa is currently the World Champion title holder in the disability category.

Lombardy East Bowling Club manager, Desire Levine said, “We are bringing a lot of exposure to our disabled bowlers and who are encouraged and taught this wonderful game. In general, bowls as a sport does an enormous amount of selfless good for society. It is one of the most underrated of the minor sports, since bowls has brought more gold medals home to SA than any other sport in the international arena.

“Many of these 35 active bowls clubs run competitions to raise funds for charities such as Hospice, Tikkun Afrika, for development in Soweto, and those suffering from other handicaps.

“That is the beauty of the sport, everybody is accepted. All walks of life can enjoy this game – and that includes youngsters, older members, white, black, blind it does not matter. Everybody is on the same level field, it’s very much a levelling game. The numbers have sadly been diminishing and a lot of that has to do with funding from the government, that is why we, as a community need to work together and generate the exposure for a sport where no one is discouraged from taking part.”

All players are welcome and anyone interested in knowing more about this incredible sport can call Des on 072 371 5204.
