JOBURG – Stolen cigarettes worth an estimated R22 million recovered with hijacked truck.

Metro police and members of the South African Police Service recovered a hijacked truck containing cigarettes worth an estimated R22 million on the N3 highway this morning, according to the spokesperson for Metro police, Wayne Minnaar.

“Officers received a tip-off that the cigarettes would have been offloaded out of a storage facility on Fortune Street in City Deep,” he told City Buzz.

“Officers discovered approximately 10 suspects offloading cigarettes but only managed to arrest two. There is an ongoing search for other eight suspects.”

Minnaar indicated that the two suspects are in police custody pending charges of armed hijacking and theft being levelled against them.

This is a developing story which City Buzz will provide further updates on once more information is available.
