Tip-off leads to arrest of suspect with unlicensed firearm

JOBURG – Johannesburg Central Police continue to clamp down on crime in CBD.

Johannesburg Central Police arrested a 35-year-old suspect for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition on the corner of Plein and Eloff streets on 6 February at 2pm.

According to Johannesburg Central Police spokesperson, Captain Xoli Mbele, they received a tip-off from a member of the community about someone carrying a firearm, and officers followed up. They found the individual, and stopped and searched him.

“Police recovered a firearm with no serial number with live rounds. He failed to produce a licence to possess a firearm and was arrested on the spot,” Mbele explained.

He said further police investigations are underway. The suspect appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on 7 February and was remanded in custody. He will appear in court again on 14 February for a formal bail application.
