At least two stray cats get killed every week in Norwood

NORWOOD – Cat-lover says some cats are run over by cars and others are allegedly mauled by three vicious dogs roaming the suburb's streets.

Three notorious dogs are on the loose and terrorising cats and the public in the streets of Norwood.

Boata Gajdzinski, a volunteer for Animal Allies, which mainly concentrates on stray cats, said cat killings in the area had increased, with some cats being killed by passing cars while others were victims of the three vicious dogs.

When Gajdzinski moved to Norwood on 20 December 2015, there were about 60 feral cats in the neighbourhood, but they now number less than 10. “At least two cats are killed a week, not only by these dogs but also by cars,” she said.

She said the owners of the dogs were unknown, and that the dogs had scratched residents’ cars on several occasions. “I have witnessed them jump on cars,” she said.

“One night they snatched a kitten in my presence and I never saw it again.”

Gajdzinski has a number of feeding stations for the cats, but she said it was becoming more difficult to feed them because the dogs ate the food and terrorised the cats. She said the cats’ decomposing, smelly bodies attracted flies and caused health hazards.

She urged residents to be on high alert, to take responsibility for their pets, and to contact her should they know who the owner of the three dogs is.
