Top marks for Alex matriculants

ALEXANDRA – Programme for Alex matriculants achieves spectacular results.

St Mary’s Community Affairs department has been active since 1990 and the Ikusasa Lethu Programme (formally the Alexandra High Schools’ Programme) currently assists more than 300 pupils from Grade 10, 11 and 12 from Alexandra and the surrounding area.

The Ikusasa Lethu Programme is held at St Mary’s School in Waverley and is a Saturday school for young people.

The pupils come from East Bank High School, Alexandra High School, Kwa-Bhekilanga Secondary School, Minerva Secondary School and Realogile High School.

They offer extensive tuition in mathematics, physical science, life sciences, geography, English and accountancy to supplement their education. The programme’s mission is to serve the Alexandra community and surrounds by making a measurable contribution to raising the level of learning and teaching.

With the dedication and commitment by these young people and teachers, a 99 per cent pass rate was achieved with the Class of 2016 matriculants. Collectively they achieved 85 distinctions, 60 out of a possible 90 candidates achieved a bachelor’s degree pass. The top three each achieved seven distinctions, with one attaining 100 per cent for mathematics and three achieved six distinctions. An astounding 30 matriculants have been accepted at universities and many have won bursaries from Zenprop, the Ernest Oppenheimer Trust, DPW and the Vincent Tshabalala Trust.
