Final book sale a success

ROSEBANK – Rosebank Library's faithful supporters are sorry to see them go.

Friends of the Rosebank Library held their final book sale and managed to raise an impressive amount on 26 January.

In an article published by the Rosebank Killarney Gazette, Week ending 20 January, chairperson Judy Stockill cited a lack of good books and volunteers, and an inability to buy new books as the main reasons for closing down.

But Stockill said the sale was a success, with the voluntary association managing to reduce its stock by half. “We just about gave the books away and still took R1 650,” said Stockill.

“That’s about what we used to take at good sales at normal prices.”

The association received a variety of books as donations from the public on the day, which boosted sales. “We also had a stock of children’s books. They are always popular and sell well,” she said.

“We had a wonderful stock of cookbooks in pristine condition, some of which went for kitchen tea gifts and some to a trainee chef.”

Regular customers and old supporters came to bid their farewell and to stock up on reading matter for the future. “We had a very busy and social day. Our faithful supporters are sorry to see us go, especially those who buy on behalf of school libraries and adult book clubs,” said Stockill.

“We are sorry about cutting off their supply.”

Remaining stock has been offered to the Friends of the Sandton Library for their monthly sale. The library remains open and operating hours are from 9am to 5pm. On Wednesdays, the library operates between 1pm and 5pm, and on Saturdays from 9am to 1pm.

The Friends of the Rosebank Library book club will have its next meeting on 1 February at 2.30pm. All are welcome.
