Important ward committee elections coming up

Ward committee elections are taking place from 28 January to 11 February.

A ward committee consists of community representatives who are elected into a portfolio of their choice to play a supportive and advisory role to the ward councillor.

Elections in Region E, the north-eastern suburbs, will be held on 28 January with special votes on 27 January. Voting will take place at Fairways Primary School and Bramley Primary School for Ward 74.

Ward 74 covers the suburbs of Melrose, Melrose Estate, Birdhaven, Orchards, Rouxville, Highlands North, Raydene, Greswold, Kew, Bramley, Elton Hill and Winston Ridge.

Ward 74 councillor David Fischer said, “All registered voters can vote in their ward. They need their identity documents to vote.”

Ward 72 councillor Steven Kruger added, “There are 10 portfolios in each ward. In Ward 72 there were 16 candidates resulting in four positions being uncontested and six contested.”

Elections for Ward 72, which covers the suburbs of Glenhazel, Sandringham, Sydenham, Fairmount, Linksfield, Linksfield North, Linksfield Ridge and Sunningdale Ridge, will take place on 28 January and will be held from 9am to 5pm at Jabula Recreation Centre.

Patrick Nhlapo, deputy director of the community participation unit, in the office of the speaker added, “We would like to encourage all residents to become active citizens by participating in all types of community structures. Ward committees are there to encourage residents to participate actively in affairs of local governance and ensure that their issues are brought to the attention of the local municipality.”
