Armed robbers warning at Bompas

ROSEBANK – Armed men are targeting motorists at Jan Smuts Avenue and Bompas Road.

A Parkhurst resident was robbed at gunpoint on the corner of Jan Smuts Avenue and Bompas Road on the evening of 11 January.

According to the victim, he was travelling alone in his vehicle, northbound on Jan Smuts Avenue and stopped at the Bompas Road intersection.

“While waiting for the robot to change I noticed a smartly-dressed man walking between the cars. He then proceeded to walk towards my car and he brushed against my window, which prompted me to look up,” explained the victim.

“When I looked at him he pointed a gun at me that was in his shirt pocket.” The victim alleged that the suspect then gestured for him to hand over his cellphone, which was on the passenger seat.

He opened his car window to hand over the cellphone to the armed robber. “He asked for my wallet, which was between the front seats but I asked for it back as I wanted all the cards.” The robber obliged and handed back the wallet, but not before taking the R200 which was in it.

According to the distraught victim, the suspect had an accomplice who he noticed was standing at his passenger door during the incident.

“He [the second suspect] was knocking on the window gesturing at my wedding band. I could not see a gun but he had his hand in his shirt,” explained the victim.

Giving a description of the suspects, the victim said both were African males. The first suspect, who appeared to be in his 30s and about 1.7m tall, was well dressed, clean shaven and was wearing a blue blazer with thin white stripes. The second suspect was the complete opposite, who appeared slightly older and looked unkempt in green clothing.

Parkview Police Station’s Sergeant Iris Phoko confirmed that a case of armed robbery has been opened at the station. “Police are investigating the matter; the perpetrators will be brought to book,” said Phoko.
