Veteran police officer shot dead

JOBURG – Suspects sought following a senseless murder of a police officer.

An off-duty Rosebank police officer was shot and killed by suspected robbers in Devland, Eldorado Park during the early hours of 14 January.

According to Sergeant Bongi Mdletshe, Rosebank Police Station spokesperson, the 44-year-old sergeant, Abel Dikang Mabote, was allegedly roused by a noise coming from his bakkie which was parked in his yard.

“He got dressed and went outside to investigate, carrying his firearm,” explained Mdletshe.

“He chased the suspects for a considerable distance but was unfortunately found dead.”

According to a statement released by the police, a witness heard two gunshots being fired and later, neighbours confirmed that Mabote had been shot.

“The Provincial Commissioner of Gauteng, Lieutenant General Deliwe de Lange has noted with deep concern the aggression and brazenness of criminals who will not think twice to take an innocent life,” the statement read.

“The police in Gauteng will mobilise all resources and will join forces with all relevant crime-fighting entities to ensure that the suspects are caught and brought to book,” said De Lange.

Mabote joined the Rosebank Police Station in 2002 and Mdletshe said his untimely death has come as a shock. “We have lost one of our family members and he was a good, respectful person,” lamented Mdletshe.

“A case of murder has been opened and anyone with information relating to this case is urged to contact the Eldorado Police Station.”
