A deep problem in Lyndhurst

LYNDHURST – A deep hole in front of a residents' home in 4th Road is a concern.

Lindiwe Sechabe, a resident of 4th Road in Lyndhurst, has been very concerned by a deep hole in front of her residence.

“It has been there since the second week of December. It seems like it was perhaps a sinkhole and measures around six feet deep,” said Sechabe.

According to the resident, the only warning and protection around this hole are two yellow barricades and tape.

“What makes matters worse is that this is an area with a great number of schoolchildren walking around. Even more worrying is that there is an early learning centre, which has children ranging from ages one to six years old and is directly opposite this hole.”

The very deep hole is only protected by two barricades and some tape.

Karabo Thage, the principal for Karabo Early Learning Centre said, “We opened the school three days ago and did notice this terrible hole opposite our school. I very much worry for the kids as there are many who walk by and a lot of them walk with their older siblings who don’t always watch out for the youngsters.

“Safety is always number one for us and we care about our children, not only on school property but off school property too. If a child of mine did fall into this hole it would not reflect well on me. I do hope this will be fixed very soon.”

Irene Rugheimer, Ward 81 councillor said, “I am unaware of this problem, it has not been brought to my attention but I will attend to it as soon as possible.”

North Eastern Tribune contacted the Johannesburg Roads Agency on 12 December. Spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers replied, “We are not aware of this problem but we will log a call and check the area is safe and take any necessary measures to ensure the safety of all.”
