Scouts lend a helping hand

The children of Bathabeleng Orphanage in Ivory Park were showered with Christmas gifts collected by the 1st German Scout Group last month.

Each Scout and Cub from the scout group in Parktown chose a child’s and prepared an assortment of small gifts. The gifts included new clothing items, treats to eat, and games and activities.

Quatermain Hotel in Morningside donated linen and curtains for use at the home. The Scout group delivered the gifts personally with a Christmas tree in tow to add to the festivities. For the Scouts, this was an opportunity to give back to a community in need.

Scout Maximilian van Heerden spent two weeks at the orphanage assisting with the running of the house, playing soccer with the children and helping with English lessons.

The 1st German Scout Group run meetings every Friday from 5.30 pm. The meetings involve fun games that promote teamwork as well as independence, the learning of scouting skills such as first aid, mapping and survival, the building of structures using knots and lashings, growing vegetables, and a number of other fun and exciting skills.
