Community cops help to put out fire caused by trolley pushers

BRAMLEY – It has now been decided that police must warn trolley pushers when they see them walking too far into the road or burning their goods.

Most drivers are familiar with the sight of men hauling large piles of recyclable goods on trolleys along main roads.

The trolley pushers are exposed to the danger of being run over and, often, drivers have to suddenly swerve out of the way, which could cause collisions.

There is also a new tendency of burning recyclable goods. Empty plastic bottles and electric wire are dangerous when set alight, and it is illegal to burn copper wire.

On January 4, on the corner of 2nd Avenue and Wynberg Road in Kew, flames from burning debris almost spread to a nearby business. Even though firefighters managed to put out the fire, burned debris was scattered all around the area.

Bramley police officers went to the scene the following morning at about 9am to help clean up, along with the community and Envirowaste depot manager Pam McAllister and regional manager Geoff Kamps. The corner of 2nd Avenue and 10th Road was also cleared of debris.

It has now been decided that the area should have 24-hour patrols and that police must warn the trolley pushers of the danger of being too far into the road or burning their goods.
