St John’s College in Houghton has certainly earned bragging rights.
Head of academics, Anne Nettleton said, “Not only are we delighted by the achievements of the boys but acknowledge the tremendous contribution of a committed, dedicated and totally professional staff body and the support and encouragement of our parents. It is this team effort of the boys, staff and parents which has resulted in such exceptional results.”
The school had two pupils achieve a staggering nine distinctions. Brandon MacKenzie also earned the IEB’s Outstanding Achievement award, placing within the top 5 per cent of learners in six or more subjects and made the top 1 per cent for Afrikaans and physical sciences. Mackenzie was able to receive an incredible 91 per cent average.
Quintus Kilbourn also earned a 91 per cent average while gaining the IEB’s Commendable Achievement by placing in the top 5 per cent in five or more subjects, and placed in the top 1 per cent for English and mathematics.
The school also saw four pupils earning eight distinctions. Sango Socikwa also earned a Commendable Achievement and ended up in the top 5 per cent in five or more subjects, and in the top 1 per cent in English, isiZulu and mathematics. His overall average was 93 per cent.
Connor Mercer also earned a Commendable Achievement award by coming in the top 5 per cent for English, Latin, life sciences and mathematics. His overall average was 92 per cent.
Justin Standish-White earned a Commendable Achievement by coming in the top 1 per cent for history, mathematics and physical sciences. His overall average was 91 per cent.
Abram Schonfeldt also earned an IEB Outstanding Achievement when he came in the top 5 per cent in six or more subjects, and the top 1 per cent in English, mathematics and physical sciences, while earning an overall average of 91 per cent.
Marketing coordinator for the school, Cailin Wandrag said, “The class of 2016 is truly an astounding class. Highly socially aware, they instigated and drove the #wakeuptoyourprivilege campaign that received wide coverage across media.
“The academic performance of the 2016 group is noteworthy and this is best seen in the achievements of the top four boys whose year averages were separated by a mere 0.8 per cent, with the gap between the top two boys being a mere 0.17 per cent, both enjoying an 89 per cent average across all subjects. More than 30 boys have the potential to be multiple-distinction candidates.”
