Pikitup’s festive season schedule released

JOBURG – The entity will collect waste over the festive season, barring certain days.

 

JOBURG – The City of Johannesburg’s waste management entity, Pikitup, has employed over 1 000 more workers over the festive season, but will not be collecting refuse on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

The entity advised that residents’ whose waste collection falls on these days to take out their bins on 26 December and 2 January, respectively.

Pikitup also encouraged residents to donate unwanted furniture or clothing to charities.

Bulelwa Zimba from Pikitup said the daily waste quantities increase over the December holidays and that the entity is expecting huge volumes of waste generated.

“Pikitup encourages residents to dispose of waste in a responsible manner to assist the City in reducing illegal dumping, the overloading of bins and the degradation of open spaces. The festive waste that is not responsibly managed usually manifests in illegal dumping which leads to health hazards that stem from rat and fly infestations.

“It is against this background that Pikitup encourages residents to minimise waste generation, particularly during this time and to practise the three Rs – reduce, reuse and recycle,” she said.

The City generates approximately 6 000 tonnes of waste on a daily basis and this culminates into 1.56 million tonnes of waste annually.
