Taxi crash on Jan Smuts, vehicles in car dealership left damaged

JOBURG - Two taxis have ploughed through a car dealership after they crashed on Jan Smuts Avenue.

According to Netcare 911, 21 people have been left injured following a taxi collision on Jan Smuts Avenue.

It is believed that the two vehicles collided into each other and then ploughed through a car dealership, damaging 5 other vehicles.

According to a statement from Emer-G-Med, who also attended the crash, the taxi was stationary when it was hit by the other taxi.

The statement read:

Yesterday afternoon just after 4pm EMER-G-MED paramedics were dispatched to reports of a mass casualty taxi accident on the corners of Jan Smuts and Waterfall, in Craighall Park.

It was reported by witnesses that a stationary taxi was rear-ended by another taxi at a high-speed, pushing the taxi into a car dealership and causing it to collide with multiple other vehicles. The guilty taxi then lost control and collided head-on with a street light pole.

One taxi caught alight, thankfully it was rapidly extinguished by a quick thinking bystander who witnessed the crash.

On arrival paramedics found the eighteen injured patients strewn across the area. One person sustained serious injuries that required Advanced Life Support intervention, the others sustained more minor injuries.

The patients were assessed and treated at the scene, before being transported to various nearby hospitals in the area.

The South African Police Services were on the scene, and it is believed that the guilty taxi driver was arrested for suspected drunk driving.
