The Joburg Jewish Male Choir experience

JOBURG – Joburg Jewish Male Choir celebrates three decades of music entertainment.

The Johannesburg Jewish Male Choir recently celebrated 31 years of entertainment to the Jewish Community of South Africa.

It first performed on the stage of the Linder Auditorium in Johannesburg in 1985, to pay tribute to the memory of Cantor Johnny Gluck, whose glorious voice still echoes in their hearts. Through his spirit, the choir has kept the heritage of Jewish music alive.

According to musical director Evelyn Green, the choir elevates the sound of Jewish prayer and song to unreachable heights. They were privileged to have performed with some of the greatest cantors during their travels abroad as well as at home.

“The choir has been an excellent ambassador for the South African Jewish community and the country as a whole. It is an acknowledged part of the Jewish art scene of Johannesburg,” said Green.

She added that the choir’s music has encapsulated the very core of Judaism through song, encompassing the history and hopes of the Jewish people. The music reaches those hidden and uncharted places of the heart, mind and soul, she said.

In a language that knows no boundaries, the music speaks to every listener, reflecting the traumas of the past and the dreams of the future. The choir has shared the concert stage on a number of occasions with other choirs as part of its outreach programme.

The music created by the choir is often broadcast on Chai FM, the local Jewish radio station.

Cantor Ezra Sher, one of the performers, said the concert was an extremely well-organised event. “I really enjoyed the camaraderie of the crowd and of the participants who took part. It was a great evening out and a wonderful experience for all those who came.”
