Festive tips to stay safe

PARKVIEW – Tips to keep you safe this festive season.

Parkview Police Station commander Colonel Sandile Mkhize and the Parkview Community Policing Forum (CPF) have shared some crime prevention tips to help keep the community safe.
“I want members of the community to feel safe,” said Mkhize.
“I want them to know we at Parkview police are here to serve them. Please, in your spare time come to the station and get to know some of our officers and also share if there is anything we can do to help the community.”
The first tip was for community members who are going away this festive season. They were urged to make sure that they did not leave their house unattended – this could be done by asking a neighbour or relative to watch over it.
Mailboxes should be emptied regularly as contact details on letters could be taken note of by criminals.
All doors and windows should be closed when leaving the house and at night when sleeping, otherwise you become an easy target.
“Members are urged to be vigilant no matter where they are. Criminals are always on high alert, so community members need to be as well. Before driving out your driveway, check outside first. I also encourage people to make use of their security companies follow-home service if they feel unsafe,” said Mkhize.
Residents should make sure all panic buttons are in working order and activate it in emergencies so police and security can react quickly.
Community members should also be wary when walking or running near parks at dawn and should not take any valuables with them.
And physically checking that your vehicle is locked at all times was the final tip given by the CPF and Parkview police.
