A melting pot of culture in Joburg city

JOBURG – Find all of Joburg's people in just one building.

A Synprop commercial property has become a business hub for businesses of all types.

The perfect representation of the Johannesburg city is epitomised in this one Joburg building where a diverse range and number of factories and businesses find their home and work in harmony.

Max Katz of Synprop, Investment Property Brokers, took City Buzz on a tour of one of their commercial properties which host all types of businesses, from furniture to ceramics and everything in between.
From the outside, the building on the corner of End and Miekle streets looks like an unassuming Johannesburg property, but on the inside, it is a melting pot of rich history and culture.

On the bottom floor is an edgy biker named Susan Ndlovu who owns SPM Motorcycle Manyawuza, a motorcycle shop which retails, buys and repairs bikes. “My father started this shop in 1998. I took it over when he passed away in 2012,” she told City Buzz.

Around the side of the building, a foreign national who was reluctant to comment, creates gorgeous African jewellery to sell at various markets in the city.
Up the stairs, we found a ceramics company that specialises in creating crockery and art pieces. “I run a company called Nyathi Arts Creations,” said Leonard Nyathi, chief executive officer of the rather successful business.

“I’ve been here about 10 years and now we have some youth with us who we are training. They work for themselves, but they are able to learn here with us. What we do is supply the ceramics to small businesses locally and even in Cape Town and overseas.”

Pointing to a gigantic ceramic work of art – a woman diving into water – Nyathi also told us that he was currently working with artist Marina Walsh on a project and had previously made a life-size rhino – also in studio – for a Save the Rhino campaign.
On the same floor is Paul Moses who runs a company, Xclusive Colurs4U, that specialises in textile dying, and he has a number of A-list clients that he supplies.

“My dad ran the company for about 40 years before I took over and we supply to a number of fashion houses. I supply David Tlale, Marianne Fassler and Biji Couture,” he said.

One thing all these companies have in common is that they don’t plan to move anytime soon and love the city environment.
