UPDATE: Jan Smuts open after JHB Zoo wall collapse
JOBURG – Flash floods cause wall to collapse.
UPDATE: 10 November 2016, 9am – Following the collapse of the boundary wall at the Joburg Zoo yesterday afternoon from the flash flooding, Jan Smuts Avenue south bound has been re opened.
The debris from the wall has been cleared up. The animals can not gain access to the road, as there is another fence blocking their path, however, they are still visible from the road.
Flooding emergencies: Please do not drive through flooded roads. Call 011 375 5555 for any city emergency. Standby teams on hand to help.

Johannesburg City Parks spokesperson Jenny Moodley last night said Joburg Zoo had vets and emergency teams on site of the collapsed wall.
“Predator enclosures have been assessed and are intact. All enclosures will continue to be closely monitored to ensure the safety of animals in our care. The Zoo will be closed tomorrow. Please call 011 6462000 for further enquiries.”

UPDATE: Following the collapse of the boundary wall at the Joburg Zoo, a bridge on 22nd Street in Parkhurst has been washed away.
INITIAL REPORT: A boundary wall at the Johannesburg Zoo on Jan Smuts Avenue has collapsed.
It is suspected that the collapse was caused by a flash flood. Eye witnesses have reported seeing antelope from the road in.

Johannesburg Zoo’s Noeleen Mattera said she had not been alerted about the incident when contacted and said the Zoo would provide comment once the damage had been accessed.
City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services spokesperson, Nana Radebe said the emergency services had not received a call yet but urged motorists to drive with extreme caution on Jan Smuts Avenue.

“Joburg EMS is on high alert and our firefighters will be checking levels of water hourly in areas that have streams,” said Radebe.
No injuries have been reported.
