Dunkeld Bowls Club occupant responds to allegations

DUNKELD – The alleged illegal occupant of the Dunkeld Bowls Club has responded.

After the Gazette printed last week’s edition, advising that the Dunkeld Bowls Club lease has allegedly been put on hold due to an illegal occupant running the restaurant at the club, the occupant, Bongani Matutu has since responded.

“Some of the allegations made are not true. For example, no one pays rent at the club and the profit that each entity makes at the club is used to upkeep their portion of the club. I use the profits I make to upkeep my restaurant, just like they do,” explained Matutu.

He further explained that his kitchen should not be seen as a health hazard as he maintains it. He invited the Gazette to take some pictures of his kitchen so the public can see what it looks like.

Matutu also said he felt that he was being singled out from the others because of his skin colour. “I will fight this for justice for people of colour to be able to use facilities like the bowls clubs. I have informed Joburg Property Company (JPC) that my staff and I were called the ‘K’ word by some members of the club and that I have opened a case with the Human Rights Commission,” he explained.

According to Matutu, he has a right to be on the premises as he paid the previous owner around R800 000 to occupy the space and will not lose all of that money.

“I have accepted the notice to oppose the confirmatory affidavit and I will be opposing; my lawyers and I are busy with it now. I will fight this until my last drop of blood. Before next week I will be suing JPC to have the tender process reviewed,” he concluded.

This is an ongoing story and more follow-ups will follow.
