15 years for robbing police officer

JOBURG – Johannesburg Central police secure a good conviction.

During a court hearing in Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court, a man was recently found guilty of an armed robbery and sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment.

Spokesperson for Johannesburg Central police, Captain Xoli Mbele, said the convicted criminal, 33-year-old Paul Matsuela, robbed a police officer on the corner of Bree and Mooi streets on 23 January at 8pm. Mbele explained that the victim was driving a grey Audi Q5 and, while stationary at a red traffic light, three men approached the victim and one pointed a firearm at him.

The suspects stole his cellphone and police appointment card before fleeing the scene.

Mbele said, through the help of the community, the suspect was apprehended at Egoli Inn Hotel, situated on the corner of Noord and Quartz streets on 22 April.

He concluded by saying the good conviction is the result of a diligent work done by the investigating officer.

The other two suspects are still on the run.
