Voice of Joburg: Jozi, my place for bargains

JOBURG – A newcomer in town talks about his experiences in the city.

From KwaZulu-Natal to the streets of Joburg – the first-timer in the city had a lot of adjustments to make on his first trip out.

Gewayne Moodley is fresh from the small town of Richards Bay and is visiting the big city. He explained that when he first arrived it was exciting to find out that there was a place in the city where he could find clothing at cheap prices.

“I went into Johannesburg to find out about this place where I could find really cheap clothes. I walked so far. I was dropped off at the taxi rank in the middle of town and walked past Absa Towers. I was with my cousin, luckily, but even though he’s from Joburg he wasn’t really familiar with town,” said Moodley.

The journey took them through the city in search of the perfect clothing items for their exciting night out.

“I found so many very cheap things, but at the end of it all, I still had to hit the Mall of Africa for some of the quality items that I needed. It was so much fun to get into the city, though,” he said.

Even with little experience of Joburg, the visitor noticed some of the inequalities that are prominent between areas. “I mean, the area by Absa Towers is very much like big overseas cities, but then we walked just down the road to places where it was quite dirty and dodgy. We went to a place where there was muti and things being sold and then just up the road, in Maboneng, there was this clean space with restaurants,” he added.

Intrigued by the city, Moodley did confirm that he would definitely come back to Johannesburg to see what else it has on offer.

“It was a nice place. You can go from the city to Sandton and every place has something different to offer. It’s a cool place,” smiled Moodley.
