Meet the award-winning Wouter Kellerman

JOBURG – Award-winning South African flautist is excited about his new projects.

Wouter Kellerman is a multi award-winning instrumentalist who has extensively explored the line between music and dance – oftentimes considering them as one.

The musician began playing the flute at age 10, but did not – like most people – let his passion die as he grew older, but rather honed in on his skills throughout his life.

“I had some great teachers all through my childhood and practised very hard,” Kellerman said. “Then once I became independent, I travelled to Europe or the USA every July for about 10 years during July to take master classes from some of the best flute teachers in the world.”

Now he is pioneering the path of solo flautists – something that is not often seen in the music industry – and has created a name for himself, having won a Grammy Award and multiple South African Music Awards.

It’s the special style of music that he creates by playing the flute that has excited fans across the globe – going from beautiful melodic sounds and quickly transitioning to a type of beat-boxing on the flute, and even creating some extraordinary African tunes by infusing melodies and beats.

The talented instrumentalist is now working on a project with Gregory Maqoma, founder of Vuyani Dance Theatre and Africa’s most loved singer, Simphiwe Dana, to work on a special show, Joys of Sharing.

“It’s a thrill for me to work with two such accomplished and imaginative artists. I have always felt that music and dance should not be separated – in Africa they have always come together. So to go back to the roots and to get an opportunity to share the music and dance together, is very exciting for me,” he said.

At a media briefing at The Dance Space in Newtown, the trio performed an exciting improvised piece to give viewers a taste of what to expect in the show, and it’s safe to say that their final performances are not to be missed.

The show will take place at The Lyric Theatre on 21 and 22 October.
