Local company wants to publicise poetry

MIDRAND – From a school community to a business, Split Image celebrates poetry on a national scale.

A Midrand resident and his fellow lovers of poetry are creating a platform to engage with the country.

Dali Luthuli, CEO of Split Image, and co-founder of the company, Keorapetse Lephogole, were friends who began the poetry group during their secondary school years and have now turned it into a company specialising in events management and public relations.

Still focused on the dream of getting poetry into the mainstream, the company has held a number of poetry sessions to get like-minded individuals in the same space. “We started a small poetry group in 2012 and realised that we would like to get to the stage of being at the same level as some of our heroes such as Lebo Mashina, Gcina Mhlophe and many more, but in order for us to do this we needed a platform,” Luthuli explained.

The company also holds workshops to encourage and empower the youth to express themselves through words and perhaps even allow them to realise their passion for this form expression, in addition to breaking the mould.

“We are trying to change the perception or stereotype that people have of poetry by allowing poets to genuinely express themselves as people and show us their character traits instead of conforming to the norms or expectations of the industry,” he said.

On 29 and 30 October, National Poetry Day, the company has put together a festival at Brooklyn Mall in Pretoria and the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, during which a number of poets will take to the stage.

In addition, they are campaigning to collect books for children who are suffering from cancer – especially during the month of October.

This is a company dedicated to making a change and by becoming aware of the poetry community and attending the National Poetry Day festivities, you could be part of that change.
