UPDATE: Parktown Protests come to an end

PARKTOWN - Students are currently protesting in the area, with roads being closed off.

UPDATE: 17 October 2017, 11:30am –

The protesting students in Parktown has since dispersed as they made their way to the Hillbrow Magistrates Court to show support for the former Wits SRC president who was arrested for allegedly assaulting a police officer. He made an appearance earlier today at the court.

The roads has since been opened in Parktown, however, debris from the protest is still visible. The case involving the former Wits SRC president has been postponed to tomorrow.

INITIAL REPORT: Parktown is the latest area where the Fees Must Fall protests have broken out.

Earlier this morning, protesting students clashed with police officials, with rubber bullets reportedly being fired while students retaliated by throwing rocks.

Due to the protests, roads have been closed which caused heavy traffic in the area.

Oxford Road has been closed due to students burning tyres on the road.

It is beleived that students will mobilise later at the Braamfontein campus to continue with their protests.
