No more stink at Killarney Mall

KILLARNEY – Shoppers are threatening to stay away until management deals with unpleasant odour.

Killarney Mall management is going the extra mile to treat the shopping centre air, following complaints from shoppers of a disgusting smell, suspected to be coming from a burst sewerage pipe.

In an email directed to Allison Anderson, Killarney Mall centre manager, Jennifer Katz, a resident in the area and frequent shopper, said visiting the mall had become an awful experience and that the unpleasant smell, left unattended, is an insult to all shoppers.

Katz wrote, “I have, on many occasions, spoken to staff at the reception desk about the disgusting smell at the centre and I’ve been told that it is a sewerage problem or a leak and that it is being attended to. This has been going on for far too long and, according to some Woolworths’ staff who I spoke to, it is not being attended to – at all!”

Katz went on to say that she was a daily visitor to the centre and that she would not be returning until the problem had been sorted out.

Ward 73 councillor Mia Snymann, said she was made aware of the problem by a resident who contacted her complaining about the smell.

“I informed mall management of the issue and we arranged a meeting where I offered to assist with any problems involving Joburg Water,” explained Snymann.

In an initial response, Killarney Mall management appealed to all shoppers to be patient and understanding while they dealt with the issue because the mall was a second home to many shoppers. However, a few days later a statement was issued saying the problem had been resolved. “Killarney Mall apologises for the inconvenience caused during the complications with the sewer lines. Unfortunately, we do rely on the services of council for sanitation and sewerage and there have been difficulties in this regard.
