ROSEBANK – Rosebank Catholic church to host a concert to raise funds for the Franciscan Damietta Peace Initiative.

The Rosebank Catholic Church will host a Joy of Love concert in celebration of St Francis of Assisi on 14 October.

According to the church, the annual concert is in its fifth year and is part of a broader programme of events honouring the saint of our time, St Francis.

Professor Douglas Irvine, chairperson of the Rosebank Justice and Peace Group in the church, said the concert specifically raised funds for the Franciscan Damietta Peace Initiative in Africa which focuses on helping divided communities and strengthening Muslim-Christian relations.

“It is tremendously important for the church to build ecumenical and interfaith relationships of friendship and collaboration in divided and violent societies and be active peacemakers,” explained Irvine.

“The social dimension is increasingly recognised in modern times as inseparable from the church’s role in the world.”

He said the range of activities during the month of October always have a special focus on homeless and poor people, emphasising that St Francis was much more than the ‘bunny-hugger’ he’s often reduced to and portrayed as ‘but a hero and bold courageous peacemaker between Muslims and Christians at the time of the Crusades 800 years ago’.

The professor added that this year’s programme would be different and unique with a medley of choirs singing songs including Mama Tembu’s Wedding, Love and Marriage, Let the River Run, Malaika, The Rhythm of Life, You Raise Me Up and Lord of the Dance to name a few.

Tickets are available at R150 per person which includes a light supper and a glass of wine or soft drink. Supper will be served from 6pm and the concert starts promptly at 7.30pm. Secure parking will be available at St Teresa’s school grounds on Keyes Avenue.
