Pippi takes centre stage

PARKTOWN – The Pippi Longstockings of the National Children's Theatre share their stage adventures.

Let’s take the time to marvel at the great young talent that appears from behind the stage curtain and compels us to smile.

Khensani Mabaso (11), Yarden Dagan (11) and Hannah Cohen (16) all star as Pippi Longstocking in the stage adaptation of Swedish writer, Astrid Lindgren’s much-loved children’s book, Pippi Longstocking.

The talented actresses said their love for acting can’t be compared to anything else they do. They each thought that Pippi’s confidence in who she is and her perfect imperfections made her a role model in her own right.

Mabaso expressed how her role as Pippi has encouraged within her the comfort of falling in love with her individual uniqueness. She said her love for acting stems from the attention she would get from roles she portrayed. “I love that I can get people to feel something through my acting that either I or they did not expect,” said Mabaso.

Dagan explained that she got into acting after Mabaso accidently introduced her to the art form. “From acting, I hope to get more confidence in myself,” said Dagan. She added that she just wants to entertain people and make them feel something, whether they laugh or cry. What she loves most about Pippi is that she is outspoken. “She is unique and she has a crazy lifestyle, also, her personality represents how people should act at times,” she said.

The girls all felt that this role called for them to be independent. As Pippi was the type of girl who threw caution to the wind, they were able to uniquely do the same on stage.

Cohen said when she was younger her dad encouraged her to do every extra mural she could, and as she grew older, she filtered through what she loved and what she didn’t. Her love of acting, along with singing and dancing, grew to hold a special space in her heart. “This is why I love musical theatre so much because I get everything I love together,” she expressed.

Each of the passionate actresses will portray Pippi in alternating shows at the National Children’s Theatre from 27 September to 16 October.
