MULTIMEDIA: Dumping rubble in parks costs City billions

JOBURG – Residents urged to take care of their parks.

Pikitup in partnership with City Parks and Intergrated Service Delivery (ISD) had a clean campaign at the James and Ethel Park on 21 September, where tons of rubble were removed.

ISD is the infrastructure service department that controls and guides the service providers like City Parks, Pikitup and City Power.

Many of the community parks in the northern suburbs have been turned into dumping sites and it costs a fortune for the City of Johannesburg to have the parks cleared.

The clean-up is expected to take weeks because of the volume of rubble. According to Alex Isaacs of Pikitup in Norwood, the removal of the illegally dumped rubble comes at a huge cost to ratepayers in the city.

However, Isaacs said this could be avoided if residents ensured that the companies that they were contracting to remove building waste definitely transporting it to the nearest landfill site.

“Our annual illegal dumping budget exceeds R1billion with all the 11 depots throughout the city combined. It’s sad to see such because this money could have been utilised somewhere else for another initiative,” said Isaacs.

Ward 74 councillor Dave Fisher, who was also present during the clean-up, urged residents to be the eyes and ears of the City and report any illegal dumping.

“Residents should immediately phone 011 375 5911, the Metro police call centre, and ask for a patrol vehicle to be sent so illegal action can be taken against these people,” said Fisher.

He also appealed to residents to make sure they knew where their rubble was being taken when they were doing renovations to their properties.

“We can never be completely happy with the maintenance of parks, because we have so many challenges but we do want to thank City Parks and Pikitup for the efforts to try and uplift the parks,” said Fisher.
