Injury results in new Cinderella cast

JOBURG – An unfortunate incident has led to a cast change for the ballet production of Cinderella.

With ballet dancer, Michael Revie unable to perform in Joburg Ballet’s upcoming Cinderella production after sustaining an injury, dancers for the roles of Cinderella, the prince and the fairy godmother have been revised.

Heading the line-up of stars now is Joburg Ballet’s prima ballerina Burnise Silvius, who will dance the lead role on opening night, partnered by principal dancer, Jonathan Rodrigues as the handsome prince.

Senior soloist, Nicole Ferreira-Dill will make her title role debut on 1 October, partnered by visiting guest artist Owen Thorne as the prince. This will be Thorne’s first professional appearance in South Africa.

Principal dancer, Shannon Glover will also dance as Cinderella on 1 October, partnered by Rodrigues.

The role of the fairy godmother will be danced alternately by Ferreira-Dill, Sanmarie Kreuzhuber, Claudia Monja and Kitty Phetla, while Andrew Botha’s glittering designs frame the action in a family-friendly production boasting charm and magic.

Audiences will now have five opportunities to see Thorne onstage. Born in New Orleans, USA, Thorne studied ballet in San Francisco, Nashville and Pennsylvania, before starting his career with Houston Ballet and later moving to Scottish Ballet. He has danced in works by many of the world’s leading choreographers.

Choreographed by Joburg Ballet’s artistic director, Iain MacDonald, Cinderella waltzes across the Joburg Theatre stage, with Johann Strauss’s champagne-infused melodies providing the perfect musical setting for this ultimate rags-to-riches tale.
